CIDA Wood Design Limited is owned and run by Ci Davis from a workshop located at the Elsecar Heritage Centre in South Yorkshire. CIDA specialises in the production of beautiful bespoke furniture, doors and windows, which are supplied nationally and can be installed locally.
Ci has 12 years experience working as a Carpenter and running his previous company, Hebden Renovation Company Ltd, from Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire. A move to South Yorkshire to begin a new personal life means 2016 is the start of a new journey for the company; a new workshop, new machinery, new company name, new website, and even a new name for Ci who is known as Chris to his previous clients.
CIDA Wood Design Limited acknowledges the heritage of the carpenter as well as the history of the designer. Wood is viewed as more than just a material; it is a living product that has unique character. The role of the carpenter is to recognize and use this individuality to best effect. A carpenter is able to use traditional skills with modern machinery to produce truly beautiful and individual pieces designed to last.
The work that I produce recognizes the evolution of design over the ages. My work is rarely reproduction of traditional design. Modernism influences me, with it’s central tenant of ‘Form Follows Function’. I am also influenced by the simple aesthetic of the ‘Shaker’ and the way in which they allow the material to express itself so honestly. I like to look at how materials can be combined: different wood types; wood and metal, concrete, or stone, and even combining finishes – I consider this to add interest to my work without resorting to unnecessary embellishment.
My work also recognizes the contribution that the client wishes to make to the design. For some of my clients they have an idea and wish me to realise that. This idea could be complete, or it may be a kernel of inspiration that I am able to develop fully. I like the process of collaboration in the design and production of my work as I feel that this often enhances the enjoyment that the client will gain from living alongside their product.
